This conversation challenges educators and leaders to explore how instruction, expectations, communication, collaboration, and school culture influence student outcomes—and how strengthening adult practice can remove barriers and create conditions where every student can thrive.
When students struggle academically, behaviorally, or socially, schools often respond by asking what additional support the student needs. But what happens when we turn the lens toward ourselves and ask: What adult practices, instructional decisions, or systems may be contributing to the challenge?

This conversation invites educators and school leaders to examine the connection between adult practice and student outcomes. Together, participants will explore how the quality and consistency of Tier 1 instruction, professional expectations, communication, family engagement, collaboration, intervention practices, and school culture can either remove barriers for students or unintentionally create them.

Rather than approaching this as a conversation about blame, participants will consider how schools can create cultures of collective responsibility in which adults feel supported while also being accountable for examining and strengthening their practice. Participants from different roles and school levels will be encouraged to share experiences, identify common systemic challenges, and learn from one another.

The conversation will challenge us to shift from simply asking, “What is wrong with this student?” to also asking, “What can we change about the environment, instruction, support, or adult practice surrounding this student?”

Participants will leave with practical strategies for strengthening adult collaboration, examining instructional and systemic barriers, engaging in difficult professional conversations, and keeping student needs at the center of decision-making.
https://btg2005.org
High School","Middle School","Elementary School","All School Levels
Participants will engage in a facilitated conversation using reflection prompts, small-group dialogue, real-world scenarios, and a “Student Lens/Adult Lens” protocol. Groups will examine common student challenges first through the traditional student-focused lens and then through an adult-practice and systems lens. Participants will identify what adults can control, change, or strengthen before immediately adding another intervention. Whole-group discussion will allow participants across grade levels and roles to share perspectives and practices. Each participant will conclude by identifying one adult practice or system they can examine or strengthen in their own setting.
LaShondra Rice
Bridging The Gap Foundation
lrice@btg2005.org
With nearly three decades of experience spanning classroom teaching across multiple grade levels, intervention, school administration, higher education, and district-level leadership, I bring a systems-level perspective grounded in the realities of both classrooms and leadership. I am committed to creating an inclusive, reflective conversation where educators can challenge assumptions, learn from one another, and leave with practical ideas they can apply immediately.
