Connecting the Dots: From Service Trip to Internship to Purpose

John Clemente, Jeannette Bautista, Travis Delancey-Goodman, Gretchen Upton

The kids the world will need know how to show up: for a community, for a team, for work that matters to someone other than themselves. Those habits are hard to teach inside four walls. They grow when young people take on real responsibility in real places, then make sense of it with adults who know them. The kids the world will need know how to show up: for a community, for a team, for work that matters to someone other than themselves. Those habits are hard to teach inside four walls. They grow when young people take on real responsibility in real places, then make sense of it with adults who know them. At South Bronx Community, students learn beyond the building in three ways. They travel on international service learning trips to places like Oaxaca, Quito and Manchester (Jamaica). They take part in domestic service projects in the Bronx and beyond. And they complete internships with community based organizations and Fortune 500 companies alike. We emphasize skill building through these experiences so that students make explicit connections between what they are doing and how it is preparing them for the future. In this conversation, the staff who lead each strand will share what's working and where the seams still show. We'll look at student reflections, partner feedback, and the structures that hold it together, such as reflection protocols, competencies and credit, and advisory connections. Participants will leave with a framework for linking their own out-of-school experiences to assessable skills and a coherent arc.

Conversational Practice

  1. Journey line (10 min): Participants sketch a learning experience outside school that shaped them, then share in pairs what made it stick.
  2. Three-strand panel (15 min): Gretchen, Jeannette, and Travis each share one student story from their strand, told in the student's words where possible.
  3. Student voice (10 min): A short video or live call with SBC students or alumni describing how one experience led to the next.
  4. Pathway mapping (15 min): Small groups map the service and work-based opportunities at their own schools and draw the connections to skills.
  5. Gallery and harvest (5 min): Groups post their maps; we capture shared strategies and questions in a shared doc.
