Democratic Schools Matter
Five Pillars of Democratic Education: Open discourse – creating classrooms and school communities where young people learn to speak honestly, listen deeply, argue passionately, and stay in the room with disagreement instead of shutting it down. Rigorous equity – treating equity not as a slogan or a set of accommodations, but as the painstaking redesign of rules, norms, and curricula so that all students- regardless of culture, language, background and prior experience, can get what they need and fully participate in shaping school life. The common good – helping students and adults alike see themselves as stewards of shared spaces, resources, and futures, not just individual achievers competing for scarce rewards. Collective decision-making – building structures where students, families, and educators share real power over how classrooms and schools are run, from restorative discipline practices to curriculum choices and school design. Sustained resilience and resistance – acknowledging that any attempt to build democratic schools will encounter resistance from entrenched systems, and persistent pull toward more traditional and hierarchical models of education.
