Dungeons, Dragons & Deeper Learning

Dan Ryder, Jacquie Gardy — Regional Community Charter School, Gardy Learning Design Studio

During this game-based conversation, we'll explore the potential possibilities tabletop roleplaying games such as Dungeons and Dragons and its less fantastical contemporaries have for our learning spaces. How might we develop our capacity for empathy by taking on the perspectives of characters? How might we improve our problem solving abilities through collaborative storytelling? And how might we explore fairness, bias, and balance through rules making and game play? These are just a few of the questions we hope to discuss in a highly interactive experience intended to provide an introduction for the uninitiated and a call to action for the experienced players in attendance.

Conversational Practice

Participants will start this conversation by participating in a brief roleplaying game designed especially for EduCon; they will create characters and guide them through an interactive problem solving story experience. After this quick game, we will debrief, deconstruct, and then design new games by remixing and reconfiguring the one played in the room. Depending on the number of participants, this may be done as a whole group or in smaller teams. The ultimate goal remains the same: create roleplaying game experiences that we might try with our learners and colleagues sooner rather than later.
