Leverage Leaders: Student Mentors as Change Agents for a Positive School Culture

Ben Koch, Jill Thomas, James Murray and students — Building 21 High School, School District of Philadelphia

Through years of observation, we identified a critical area for growth in our school culture: empowering students to use their leadership skills to uplift their peers. To meet this need, we established our Mentor Advisory program. This year, a select cohort of 12th-grade students is exploring and developing their leadership capacity using The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens as a foundational text. Their primary mission is to support 9th-grade students navigating the academic and social transitions of high school. Mentors work one-on-one with mentees and facilitate community-building activities across 9th-grade advisory spaces, extending peer-led support across our entire school community, giving students a support that helps navigate the differences in a competency based system. Throughout this experience, senior mentors examine their own leadership styles, strengthen critical thinking skills, and contribute directly to building a curriculum that will serve as their lasting high school legacy. A key focus of their challenge is supporting students who often go unnoticed—those who may not demand attention in classroom settings or community spaces. Mentors aim to provide these students with the tools and encouragement needed to thrive as their best selves. Specifically, senior mentors coach freshmen in developing strong work habits, navigating our competency-based learning system, accessing additional academic support, and finding their voice during challenging conversations with peers and adults. By fostering peer-driven agency and belonging, our program strives to ensure that every student feels seen, supported, and equipped for high school and beyond.

Conversational Practice

Mentors will introduce a video showing what their week entails. This will walk the audience through how the students facilitate community building activities in 9th grade advisories, how they mentor students 1:1 and in small groups, and how they conclude the week with a reflection of their learnings from the scope of the week including their study of the 7 Habits for Teens book and a Problem of Practice Protocol. Upon the conclusion of the video, students with engage in a Q&A session with the audience.
