Student Advocacy: How teaching students about civil rights can develop critical thinking

Fatim Byrd — Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission

This multi week program engages youth in exploring social justice advocacy, civil rights history, and relevant issues facing society today. Through interactive discussions, historical examples, real-world applications, and advocacy exercises, participants will develop a strong understanding of social justice and learn how to be effective advocates for positive change. Each week will include a 1-hour interactive session, designed to be dynamic, informative, and motivating.

Conversational Practice

Our conversation will require participants to engage in small group discussions and stations focused on the topics in the curriculum we teach. The conversation will be broken up into 10 stations. Each station will be a topic explored in the curriculum. The following are topics: Introduction to Social Justice and Advocacy, The History of Civil Rights & Icons, Understanding and Challenging Bias and Discrimination, Intersectionality and Gender Equity, Culture, Pride and Appropriation, Building a Just Future: Your Role as an Advocate, Environmental Justice and Activism, School-to-Prison Pipeline, Conflict Resolution and Exploring the Intersection of Discrimination and Trauma. Participants at each station will be given information on the topics and discuss it as a group. The primary questions at each station will be: What are the prior knowledge will students need to explore this topic? How does this topic help expand critical thinking? Is this a topic that you explore in your classroom or school? What teaching strategies could we use to get students engaged in this topic? Each station will share the answers to these questions with the whole group. I will give direct instruction and facilitate the discussion on how we build critical thinking in students through these topics. At the end of the conversation, participants will leave with a clear vision on chart paper of what they learned and how to facilitate these kinds of topics.
