Walking Our Way into Curiosity

Christian Long

Inquiry stands at the heart of 'progressive' and 'learner-centered' education, yet Curiosity as practice can still feel elusive. We typically ask how we might create conditions for students to become more curious. But what if we first began with ourselves, intentionally practicing Curiosity together as human beings, not simply as educators?

Conversational Practice

Inquiry stands at the heart of 'progressive' and 'learner-centered' education, yet Curiosity as practice can still feel elusive. We typically ask how we might create conditions for students to become more curious. But what if we first began with ourselves, intentionally practicing Curiosity together as human beings, not simply as educators?

WHAT WE'LL DO: We'll begin this conversation by getting out of our seats. And by going for a walk. Outside. Yes, we'll literally go for a walk together outside on the sidewalk. No matter the weather or temperature. For the entire session.

HOW WILL WE EXPERIENCE THIS? Ultimately, we'll walk and talk. Specifically, we'll gather as a group outside SLA to hear the 'prompt' and 'protocol'. You'll then walk 'shoulder-to-shoulder' with 3 different partners, all reflecting upon the same question as you walk a set route. After your walk, we'll gather as a group to share reflections.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER? First, we will all get to meet new colleagues in an unexpected way. Second, we'll let (urban) nature and a bit of exercise spark our curiosity muscles and stretch our assumptions. Third, instead of discussing inquiry and curiosity as concepts, we'll be invited to experience them in real time. Fourth, we'll be challenged to assume less and explore more; similarly, we'll be challenged to share our real selves, not just our professional personas. Fifth, we'll learn techniques we can 'bring back' to the classroom'; better, we'll consider 'who we are' no matter where we are.
