What can you make?
Problem or project based work provides the basis for students to learn through making. The ideas in this session are largely taken from “Invent to Learn” by Sylvia Libow Martinez and Gary S. Stager. The question , How do I set up my classroom as makerspace and course learning cycles to give students the guidance, time, and space to learn through creation and iteration? At the heart of this work is also reimagining spaces where and students learn. A space that looks and operates differently from traditional classroom also facilitates learning differently.
If my admin approves, I will bring up to 6 current Physics students to be part of this conversation as they are my co-creators of space and learning specifically over the last 3 years. They can speak directly to their experiences in my classes. These students are juniors that have experienced 2-4 classes with me during their high school years. They have been in Drawing & Design for Production class, Technical Math, Physics 1, and this year in Physics 2 classes. They are best able to talk about what makes the learning through making harder/easier, deeper, etc. They can also discuss where they think it may fall short of their learning expectations and their wishes for future. All of my students are what the world needs, I offer up a few to be with us in this session. :-)
Conversational Practice
I will have my students co-plan sprcifics with me. I imagine the structure of the conversation time to have 2 main parts. The first is to start with a making session. Participants will be given a short design/build task. The second half is something like a panel discussion with students as panelists where I start with questions. Q's would range from questions about the physical spaces and logistics of resources and materials all the way to projects, processes and products themselves based on individual student experiences. After 2 or 3 warm-up questions, panelists will open it up to answer audience questions that can be facilitated into a whole group discussion once connection and collegiality are built to allow for free exchange of ideas and experiences. A google sheet can be shared for participants to share project resources, classroom makeover resources, etc.
