Applications of the Arts in Academia
Science Leadership Academy incorporates open-ended assignments and projects across subjects. This might look like political elections, map-making, and zine-writing, among many other examples. How do we come up with assignments and projects that enhance curriculum and draw students into a topic? How do we give students agency and guidance while tackling challenging ideas? Yadierys Angeles teaches art at SLA and is an alumna of the school. While the basics of drawing, sculpture and art history are touched on in her Art classes, students are encouraged to explore creativity and the ways they may personally encounter it beyond high school. Whether or not students are looking to Art in the professional field, art and creativity is all around them! Students embrace this theme through personalized courses and free-choice projects. Serenity Baruzzini teaches the Career and Technical Education Engineering program and is also an alumna of SLA. While covering topics including tool training, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and aerospace, students interact with the human-relationships involved. Engineers are tasked as problem-solvers and need the skillsets to communicate and empathize with people they intend to help. Sergio Stryker is the CTE internship coordinator and drama teacher at Science Leadership Academy. Sergio has taught photography workshops in New Mexico, Washington DC, Maryland and Chicago. Sergio incorporates image making and visual literacy in all of his curriculum. This year, he aspires to build a photographic darkroom with his student club at SLA.
Conversational Practice
This session will largely be a discussion amongst educators about creative practices they have tried or want to try in their own spaces. As a group, we will develop a shared document that houses these ideas across subjects.
